Our school had a very big football ground and before it rained, dragonflies almost always swarmed the place. But before the dragonflies come in, it was just another sunny afternoon. Someone shouted, “Pass the ball here”. “No, I’ll take it”, replied another. The rest started gathering all around him just to get that ball. Suddenly, black clouds covered up the sky. But that act of nature somehow could not manage to get our attention.
He tried hard to make his way through the seemingly ever-expanding mob around him. Finding even a small gap between the legs was getting more and more difficult. Wind kicked in next, but our ground didn’t have dry leaves to create the Mohabbatein effect. So, it was just gushes of breeze skimming over our sweaty faces and it was bliss. Some of us went into a sudden high and forgot all about that ball. Well, he took the opportunity and pushed it right into the goal, where the goalkeeper had his eyes closed quietly enjoying the breeze. We won the match and that’s the end of it.
But this was when those beautiful creatures called dragonflies came in. They came in all colours and were all over the place. And if you look at them from close, they have a very interesting resemblance to helicopters. I wondered if they used them to show helicopters at a distance in movies. Nonetheless, these dragonflies meant so much to me. I loved them, so I had to have them. Looked around and found an empty matchbox. And then the adventure begun. “Catch it and take it home.” After an hour of chasing those marvellous creatures, I managed to box one of them. I can only imagine the huge grin on my face then. Back to my class, I was absolutely proud of what I did. I slid open its cover, very little every once in a while just to see my prized possession.
On my way home, I was happily flaunting it to everyone with a smug expression. But after I reached home, I forgot about it altogether and was watching Cartoon Network. After about a couple of hours, I remembered suddenly and ran to my bag to find the box. I slowly slid the cover as usual, but this time it wasn’t moving. I burst into tears and when I told my mom about this, she said
“If you really love something,
you don’t put it in a box.
You love it
and set it free.
If it ever comes back to you,
then your love is true.”
